Music Therapist John Moon, LPMT, MT-BC has joined the Life Enrichment staff at The Glen at Lake Oconee Village.
In his position, Moon helps develop and execute person-centered activity programs catered to the preferences of the residents of The Glen at Lake Oconee Village, including independent living, assisted living, and memory care, as well as one-on-one activities. He became a licensed, board-certified Music Therapist in December of 2016 and has fully incorporated his music therapy into his activity skills to engage residents of The Glen. Although his principle instrument is voice, John plays the guitar and piano, as well as enjoys a basic knowledge of other instruments.
“Music can be a powerful experience,” says Moon. “Often, songs are linked to specific memories which make music a great tool for reminiscing. Music can also be used to help an anxious or agitated person with dementia relax and distract them from some of the anxiety they are feeling. Music is an international language and therefore is relatable to everyone. Despite differences in musical preference, music can bring people together to share in the experience.”
John completed his Bachelor of Music Therapy degree from Georgia College in Milledgeville in 2015. He then began working in long-term care with senior adults leading activities in the skilled-nursing unit at Carlyle Place in Macon prior to joining The Glen at Lake Oconee Village.
John and his wife, Samantha will be relocating to the Lake Oconee area soon.
